Fresno Pacific Reaching Out To ITT Students

Newly updated information on the board's website,, details the status of several for-profit schools formerly operating in Fort Wayne, including ITT, Brown Mackie College and American National University.

Nicole Elam, vice-president of government relations and external affairs at ITT, said the organization would make no comment on the situation that led to the closure.

"I was devastated", student Karla Suero told CBS46. "We have and will continue to communicate such information directly to students".

In this immediate aftermath of the ITT closing, all energies must be channeled toward assisting the primary victims - the students.

The letter blamed the shutdown on the actions of the Department of Education. Mello said that she tried to transfer credits from South Suburban College in South Holland, Ill., but she said ITT Tech somehow managed to charge her thousands more in loans.

A small number of ITT students have also contacted the University of Wisconsin-Parkside about attending school there. The department noted that its decision about ITT Tech does not diminish the value of the degrees earned at the institution. "Seeing their insides, and seeing if I could fix them" Hickey said. "My overall experience was not bad, but lacking in a lot of areas".

In short, the demise of ITT Technical Institute vividly illustrates the need for enhanced scrutiny, transparency and accountability among profit-making institutions of higher education and vocational training.

The administration is suspicious because for-profit colleges account for about 13 percent of higher education enrollment, yet have almost 50 percent of federal student loan defaults.

"To begin classes this fall, qualified students will receive individualized attention and will be walked through the enrollment process".

Since the ITT Tech schools shut down, students say that the links and phone numbers they were given to get their questions answered turned out to be nothing but dead ends. It is important to note that transferring your credits may limit your ability to have your federal loans discharged.

Juhlin, of the Center for Excellence in Higher Education, thinks the administration wants to redirect all federal aid dollars to public institutions, a charge education officials have denied.

Students enrolled within roughly the past 120 days who don't plan to transfer are eligible to have their loans forgiven. State officials should explain why they approved an ITT charter school designed as a pipeline to attract even more students and their financial assistance. "Interested students may call Myra Hafer at 940.369.8044 or email at", the release said. "Nothing, waiting in limbo and hoping we get our transcripts in the mail so we can move forward with our lives", Plumb said. And it's not clear how many credits a reputable school will accept, if any. Yet President Barack Obama's administration, he said, is "sacrificing a whole generation of students to advance their ideological hostility" toward for-profit schools. Prospective students can explore the campus, speak with career and veteran advisors, and financial aid staff.
