Ball may only workout for Lakers

The Boston Celtics are officially on the clock after landing the No. 1 pick via the Brooklyn Nets at the lottery on Tuesday night.

NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum, left, watches as Boston Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck, right, reacts after the learning the Celtics had won the first pick in the NBA basketball draft, at the draft lottery Tuesday, May 16, 2017, in NY. However, not to be left on the side of the road in despair, the 76ers managed to climb their way into 3rd thanks to a trade with the Sacramento Kings and the Lakers managed to keep their top 3 protected pick that could have gone to Philly. The timing couldn’t have worked out better, as the Nets tumbled all the way to the worst record in the National Basketball Association this season.

The Suns have the second best odds at the No. 1 pick (19.9 percent) and the Lakers have the third best odds at the No. 1 pick (15.6). These are the players who are ready-made for the team I’ve paired them up with and who could make the most lasting impact on that team.

“Our range was one-to-five. I wish we would have gotten the No. 1 pick, but we trust the process and it’s going to be exciting to see what we’re going for”.

The top three picks came down to the Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers. The Knicks would probably jump at the opportunity to move up to three and the Sixers could force a pick swap, only dropping down to No. 8. And since it starts in the No. 4 spot with its own pick, Philadelphia can arrive at next month’s draft potentially owning a pair of top-four selections. His speed is his best attribute, and he has proven that he can play on the biggest stages as he scored 39 points in the NCAA Tournament against Ball and UCLA.

ESPN lists Markelle Fultz, Ball, De’Aaron Fox, Josh Jackson and Jayson Tatum as candidates to be selected first overall. The Lakers need an injection of talent, and seem to be lacking at point guard as D’Angelo Russell hasn’t developed at the rate some thought he would.

Brown’s plan is to play the 6-foot-10 Simmons, the 2016 No. 1 overall pick who missed his rookie season due to a fractured right foot, at point guard on offense.

On top of that, the upside of the top prospects in this draft is tantalizing. “We think we’re going to add a great player or we’re going to have some leverage in discussions with other teams about certain situations that we might entertain”, Colangelo said. What more could Boston want right now?
