Karti Chidambaram left for London soon after CBI raids at his residence

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had on Tuesday raided houses and other premises of former finance minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti over alleged favours granted in foreign investment clearance to INX Media in 2007. His father also told PTI in New Delhi, “Karti is travelling as per earlier travel plans”.

The FIR related to charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, receiving illegal gratification, influencing public servants and criminal misconduct.

The raids coincide with the CBI search being conducted at the residences of ex-Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram in Chennai.

Mr Chidambaram said that neither he nor Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) officials were suspected of wrongdoing in the hundreds of cases it had reviewed while he was in office.

Congress instead, accused the BJP for shielding corrupt party leaders holding ministerial positions in the NDA government.

“The government, using the CBI and other agencies, is targeting my son and his friends”.

Jaitley was asked to comment on Opposition’s charge against the government of using CBI and I-T department to attack Opposition leaders. But he would continue to speak and write, he declared.

The officials said the accused, including Karti will be examined in the same matter and summons asking them to be present in the agency headquarters here will be sent in the next few days. “There is no allegation against me”, he added. There is no bar on Karti leaving the country as there is no look out circular issued against him. I do not understand why they are conducting raids.

“Neither P Chidambaram nor any Congress leader would be deterred or cowed down from fear of the politics of vendetta, ” media-in-charge Congress Randeep Surjewala said at a press conference called by the party to counter the BJP government’s three-year anniversary. Official sources in Delhi said the searches were spread across Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Gurugram.

“Revenge and registration of false cases has become the DNA of the BJP government”.

Jaitley defended the searches at the homes of his predecessor Chidambaram and his son, and Bihar politician Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad, and his associates. “There are millions of thousands of Lalus in Bihar”, the RJD chief and former Bihar CM said on Twitter sounding a warning, asking the BJP to “be careful”. Congress’ reaction came in response to nationwide raids by the CBI on premises belong to senior congress leader and former union finance minister P. Chidambaram.

BJP leaders rubbished Yadav’s allegations saying the NDA government was not in the habit of interfering in the law and order functioning of the nation.
