Trump looks to move quickly on appointing new Federal Bureau of Investigation chief

The standoff between President Donald Trump and his former FBI director intensified Tuesday with the news of James Comey’s memo saying that Trump asked him to shut down the agency’s investigation into ousted national security adviser Michael Flynn. Trump suggested, in an exclusive interview Thursday with Holt, that he had the FBI’s Russian Federation collusion investigation on his mind when he chose to remove Comey. Experts say the alleged conversations raise concerns about potential intimidation and conflicts of interest.

The firing of James Comey has come under huge scrutiny as FBI is investigating alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 United States election, and possible Moscow ties to the Trump presidential campaign. Asking such a question “would come close to bribery… or at least obstruction of justice, which Comey would’ve had to be an idiot to fall for by offering the assurance sought”, Tribe said. “Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe said under oath this week, ‘There’s been no effort to impede our investigation to date.’ I take him at his word”.

“Even that is possible”, Trump told reporters when asked whether he could announce his nominee by Friday, when he is scheduled to leave for the Mideast and Europe.

Democrats are demanding appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election and ties to Trump’s campaign, and have discussed trying to slow down the confirmation process or other business of the Senate as a way of drawing attention to the demand. John Conyers and Elijah Cummings, ranking Democrats on the House Judiciary and Oversight committees, in a letter to White House Counsel Don McGahn.

Warner also said he hopes to have Comey testify in a public hearing before his committee.

The White House had no immediate comment on Clapper’s remarks on a morning in which no White House aide appeared on the Sunday news shows to discuss Trump’s firing.

Donald Trump warned his sacked Federal Bureau of Investigation director not to talk to the press yesterday, in a morning Twitter tirade that painted a picture of a president under siege and lashing out. Not everyone agreed with each Comey decision, but he was a popular and well-regarded director, they said. “If the election were on October 27, I would have been your president”, she tells a women’s luncheon in NY.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein interviewed eight candidates Saturday, including some who were not among the names distributed a day earlier by the White House.

Lawmakers from both parties reprimanded Trump’s actions last week, which included shifting explanations from the White House for Comey’s dismissal and an ominous tweet by Trump that warned Comey against leaks to the press because he may have “tapes” of their conversations.

May 16, 2017: A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Comey wrote a memo after the February 14 meeting with the president that said Trump had asked him to shut down the FBI investigation into Flynn.

In an interview with Fox News Friday, Trump declined to comment on whether he has listening devices in the White House.

Senate intelligence committee Chairman Richard Burr said he doesn’t think the FBI’s Trump-Russia investigation was the reason for the firing.
