White House moves to limit damage of latest Trump controversy

“Our job is to be responsible, sober and focus only on gathering the facts”.

Mueller’s appointment comes after growing outcry from Democrats amid fallout of President Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey last week.

Former FBI Director Robert Mueller testifies before the Senate Intelligence Committee during the annual open hearing on worldwide threats on March 12, 2013. It also asked the Federal Bureau of Investigation for any notes or memos written by Mr Comey about his communications with administration officials about the Russian Federation probe.

Former Attorney General Sally Yates warned the White House in January that Flynn misrepresented his conversations with Russia’s U.S. ambassador, Sergey Kislyak, leaving Flynn vulnerable to blackmail.

But the New York Times report claiming Trump asked former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey to end the probe into former national security adviser Michael Flynn emboldened Green.

“As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know – there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity”, Mr. Trump said in a statement issued by the White House.

Republicans in Congress are trying to project a business-as-usual approach. “We’re going to keep doing our jobs, we’re going to keep passing our bills, we’re going to keep advancing our reforms”, Mr Ryan said.
