The big news came after the fight, when Canelo announced in the ring that he would next challenge unified middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) on September 16, Mexican Independence Day weekend.
The contract has been signed, The Associated Press reported, only the venue is undetermined.
While neither is in the same class as Golovkin, GGG had his 23-fight knockout streak end against Jacobs. But as the fight progressed, Alvarez never ceased his assault, essentially winning every round easily. The Chavez Jr. camp went as far to say as this training camp was the best the fighter has done up to date. And the judges had this one right: all three scored it 120-108, a whitewashing for Canelo, who improved to 49-1-1 with 34 KOs. The bigger Chavez (50-3-1, 32 KOs) started bleeding from the nose in the third round. But Chavez has fought just once in almost two years and has lost twice in his past six bouts.
If there was any doubt as to who is the biggest Mexican boxing star before May 6, Canelo Alvarez shattered any remaining doubt.
According to Compubox numbers, Alvarez landed 228 out of 606 punches (38%) Chavez Jr landed a pathetic 71 out of 302 punches (24%).
“I showed I could move, I could box, I could do everything”, Canelo said after the fight to a mixture of cheers and boos, a tiny trickle of sweat all there was to indicate he had been in a prizefight.
“I’m happy to give the fans another great fight, which is the only thing I want to do in my career”, Alvarez said. “I couldn’t throw more punches”.
Alvarez’s team was so confident, they cut the deal with Golovkin before the bout. “I’ll be at that one too!”
“I’ve always stated that Triple G will happen in 2017, ever since a year ago when everyone was asking ‘Why are you afraid of Triple G?’” he said. I’ve said in the past that this is the kind of fight that [you can do] two or three times. The 31-year-old, however, is coming off back-to-back unanimous-decision victories over Marcos Reyes and Dominic Britsch. But he proved no match.
Both fighters weighed in Friday at the 164-pound catchweight.
Alvarez, 26, enters the fight having won six consecutive fights since his defeat to Floyd Mayweather in September 2013. “I’ll keep working with Nacho [Beristain, his trainer]”.
Canelo had been using hard power shots to wear down Chavez. “I couldn’t throw as many punches as I wanted”.
“I’ve been very impressed in the development of Canelo”, the American former middleweight and light heavyweight champion told Omnisport.
It may seem like Anthony Joshua vs. Deontay Wilder would be the biggest fight in boxing, considering he sold out Wembley Stadium. Only this time there was a distinct Latino flavor. Amir Khan and Chavez Jr, with the latter setting a new attendance record at 20,510. And the fact he went the distance was more a testament of thick whiskers than actual boxing prowess.
Triple G versus Canelo is the biggest fight that can be made in boxing, and it’s a fight that fans have been wanting to see for over a year. He’s guaranteed $5 million.
