Chris Cornell’s Family Disputes He Killed Himself

Cornell was born and raised in the city and was part of a close-knit group of artists who formed the foundation of what would become the grunge scene that exploded in the early 1990s by combining the bombast of early 1970s heavy metal with the aggression and attitude of punk rock.

Cornell, who was born and raised i. “They need to be kind of real and they need to have a beginning, middle and an end”, Cornell said of songwriting in a 2015 interview with The Associated Press.

In a heartfelt statement, Vicky Karayiannis denied reports Cornell may have intentionally attempted suicide after a medical examiner said he took his own life. Given the lengths Cornell took to beat his substance abuse problems, his wife and lawyer refuse to believe that Chris may have killed himself intentionally. His body was found Thursday morning.

An attorney for the family also emphasized the belief that an extra dose of Ativan, a benzodiazepine often prescribed for anxiety, had led to the tragedy. Cornell’s family and wife, Vicky Cornell, are now questioning that account. Michael Woody, director of media relations for the Detroit Police, told Variety that the report had been leaked and an official version will not be available until the medical report is complete, probably several weeks from now. Cornell’s family disputes the finding, saying they’re awaiting toxicology tests.

Authorities say Cornell hanged himself on May 18 after performing at a concert the evening of May 17 in Detroit.

Cornell said the singer, a recovering addict, was taking the prescription drug Ativan, which treats anxiety and insomnia.

The rocker was found in his hotel room at the MGM Grand Detroit following Soundgarden’s performance at the Fox Theatre.

“When we spoke after the show, I noticed he was slurring his words; he was different”, Vicky said in a statement.

“He was a huge influence, one of the greatest singers ever to come out of Seattle, maybe the greatest single voice”, said Charles R. Cross, a Seattle-based music journalist and author who knew Cornell personally. According to a preliminary autopsy conducted by the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office, Cornell was found with a band around his neck in an apparent suicide.
