Cornell killed himself by hanging

Cornell was the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of Soundgarden, formed in 1984. The band released three albums in six years and also performed at a concert billed as Cuba’s first outdoor rock concert by an American band, though some Cuban artists have disputed that claim.

A medical examiner has determined that Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell killed himself by hanging in a Detroit hotel room following a concert. Dontae Freeman, a spokesman for the Detroit Police Department, said in an interview that at about midnight officers responded at the MGM Grand casino to an apparent suicide of a white man, born July 20, 1964, who was pronounced dead on the scene. The Detroit News cited Freeman in a similar report.

With Audioslave having disbanded in 2007 due to personality conflicts amongst its members, Cornell reunited with Soundgarden in 2010, releasing “King Animal” two years later and continuing to perform across the country. Woody repeated that police are investigating Cornell’s death Wednesday night as a possible suicide, and that the investigation continues.

According to his representative, rocker Chris Cornell, who gained fame as the lead singer of Soundgarden and later Audioslave, has died Wednesday night in Detroit at age 52.

Wayne County spokeswoman Lisa Croff said Thursday morning that the autopsy is being conducted by the county Medical Examiner’s office.

The 52-year-old Cornell was the lead singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave.

Cornell was on tour and performed Wednesday night in Detroit with Soundgarden.

Police have also said it’s too early to properly determine a cause of death.

Chris Cornell, the lead singer of USA grunge rock band Soundgarden, died after hanging himself, medical officials have said. Woody says the friend forced open a hotel room door and found Cornell on the bathroom floor. He went through a period where he had few, if any, close friends, and those he associated with only pulled him further into the world of drugs.

Among his most famous songs were Soundgarden’s 1994 grunge theme Black Hole Sun, and Hunger Strike – a 1991 hit for another of his rock bands, Temple Of The Dog, where he teamed up with Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder. “They need to be kind of real and they need to have a beginning, middle and an end”, Cornell said of songwriting in a 2015 interview with The Associated Press. Elton John, himself, has tweeted that he is “Shocked and saddened by the sudden death of @chriscornell”. The body was transferred to the medical examiner’s office and the cause of death will be determined.
