EA’s CEO, Andrew Wilson, was recently quoted saying “Star Wars Battlefront II will have more than three times the content of the previous game at launch, with a brand-new story, a new single-player campaign, new modes, characters, vehicles and planets from all eras in the Star Wars universe”. Rather than casting Imperials as the out-and-out baddies, Battlefront 2’s story hopes to show the people behind the Stormtrooper helmets.
The video details the development team’s decision to make Battlefront II’s lead a model member of the Empire as one born out of a desire to do something different rather than retell the story through the well-documented perspective of the Rebel Alliance.
“Another great thing they included was to do it from an Imperial point of view”. She’s not just a soldier (and a very good one at that), but part of “an Imperial family”: Her father is an admiral in the fleet. She is then the flawless candidate to believe in the good that the Empire can do, and should act as a long-awaited counterpoint to the constant depiction of the Imperials as nothing but space Nazis. Rather than the Clones in the prequel films, the Stormtroopers aren’t bred for war; they are non-conscripted soldiers who are all fighting for their own reasons and goals. There’s a lot the writers could do with an Empire-focused narrative, so hopefully they’ll find some interesting angles.
Considering the Empire’s actions, such as blowing up the planet Alderaan, almost wiping out the Jedi, putting the galaxy under the yoke of a cruel and tyrannical regime, DICE has their work cut out for them to make us sympathize with Battlefront 2 story characters.
