58 people feared dead in London tower fire

There were about 600 people living in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower when fire swept through most of the building in the early hours of 14 June.

There are questions about why the block was not fitted with sprinklers or a central smoke alarm, as well as whether the recent refurbishment – including the use of cladding that was blamed for worsening previous building fires in France, the United Arab Emirates and Australia – helped fuel the flames.

Reports suggest that a renovation project on Grenfell Tower past year intentionally did not include safety devices such as sprinklers and doors created to keep the fire from spreading. Grief turned to outrage Friday amid reports that materials used in the building’s renovation could have fueled the i.

His comments came as two cladding experts speculated that the fire spread rapidly up the clad external columns of the building jumping fire breaks because aluminium composition cladding appeared to have flammable polyethylene cores.

Labour Party lawmaker David Lammy demanded that the government and police immediately seize all documents relating to Grenfell’s renovation to prevent the destruction of evidence that could show criminal wrongdoing.

“When the truth comes out about this tragedy, we may find that there is blood on the hands of a number of organizations”, Lammy said.

At a press conference Sunday, Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy said the scale of the damage “verge on indescribable”. He has not provided details about the inquiry.

On Monday afternoon, it emerged that one charred room in the tower block was found to contain the bodies of 42 people.

The government was repeatedly warned that fire regulations were not adequate, a BBC investigation claimed.

Community groups have said warnings about poor fire safety have always been ignored, and that in the aftermath of the disaster, officials had failed to immediately take care of those affected.

While emergency services have been widely praised for their handling of the disaster, the government has been criticised for a slow and inadequate response, with Prime Minister Theresa May facing public anger for failing to meet residents during her first visit to the site.
