Comeback win sees Murray to fourth successive Roland Garros semi-final

Murray was not at his best but came back from a set down in the quarter-finals to defeat Kei Nishikori in Paris 2-6 6-1 7-6 (7-0) 6-1.

Kei Nishikori recovered from losing the opening set 6-0 to Fernando Verdasco to join the other big guns in the quarter-finals of the French Open.

The 30-year-old Briton goes on to face 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka who dispatched Marin Cilic 6-3 6-3 6-1 earlier in the day.

Murray beat the 21-year-old Khachanov 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and four minutes to record the 650th win of his career.

Nine-time champion Nadal is due to take on compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta, while title-holder Djokovic faces sixth seed Dominic Thiem in a repeat of last year’s semi-final.

This match is a toss-up in my eyes, as Wawrinka does have the edge on clay and is playing better tennis overall, but it’s tough to bet against Murray and that defense. “I’m happy to be into the semi-finals again, it’s not always been easy for me, but the past few years have been great”.

Wawrinka was surprised to see the sixth seed win so easily, particularly picking up a bagel in the third set against the reigning champion. Grand Slams excite him.

“Today was a ideal match for me, I thought I played very well from the beginning”, Wawrinka told a news conference.

In the women’s draw, third seed Simona Halep battled back from a set down to beat Elina Svitolina 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-0.

Murray said: “Obviously for a couple of points after that I was sacked up, because I was frustrated at that moment”.

Rafael Nadal took issue with Ramos earlier in the tournament for treating him like a “machine” and suggested he was being unfairly targeted to speed up play.

But Svitolina, who needed treatment on her back at the start of the third set, broke and soon won on her second match point, when Martic hit a backhand into the net. “Rafa’s had a great clay-court season, as has Thiem”.

“I watched a little bit of the first set”.

The second-seeded Karolina Pliskova also fought hard to overcome Veronica Cepede Royg 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, In an all-France contest, the No. 28 seed Caroline Garcia defeated Alize Cornet 6-2, 6-4.

Neither Murray nor Nishikori has ever won the French Open. I think he started really well, the court bounces really high today and he was using a very heavy forehand and I was running side to side. “I’m feeling good going into the middle part of the second week”.
