Del Ray streets near congressional baseball shooting reopen

“I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two or three days ago”.

“The congressman’s status remains critical”, Dr Jack Sava, the director of trauma at the MedStar Washington Hospital Centre, told reporters.

Five people were injured, including MI native Matt Mika and U.S. Rep Steve Scalise, R-Louisiana, who remain in critical condition. “ONE FAMILY”, proclaimed a sign in the crowd.

Sava said Friday that there were still hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise’s body, but that doctors “have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point”.

As congressional Republicans and Democrats joined Thursday night in their annual baseball game, played this year in Scalise’s honor, word came from the hospital that he remained in critical condition, but had “improved in the last 24 hours”.

He was one of four wounded by a gunman Wednesday in an attack on a Republican team practice in Virginia.

On Thursday, the hospital reiterated that Scalise will need more operations and will be in the hospital “for some time”.

Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot multiple times and critically injured.

“Not here, but in our thoughts and prayers, Steve Scalise“, said the announcer before the game.

“He is more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones”, the statement said. His risk of death is “substantially lower” than it was when he was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday, and “I think that an excellent recovery is a good possibility”, Sava said.

President Donald Trump said Friday that Steve Scalise “took a bullet for all of us”.

“We’ve had a very, very divided country for many years”, Trump said.

The motive for the shooting remained unclear but authorities were zeroing in on the life of James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old man from IL, in the months and weeks before Wednesday morning’s shooting. Ivanka Trump, joined by Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and her two eldest children Arabella and Joseph Kushner, presented a $50,000 check from “Friends in the Trump Administration” to “Congressional Sports for Charity” at the game. The hospital also said it will continue to provide periodical updates.

Aides to Ryan, R-Wis., confirmed the speaker had visited Scalise at the hospital but declined to provide details of the encounter.

Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, arrived at the hospital via helicopter in shock, with intense internal bleeding, Sava said.

The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip Wednesday morning in the baseball practice shooting by an IL man with grudges against President Donald Trump and the GOP. But he stopped short of providing specifics of Scalise’s internal injuries.
