Fresh off a series of Sunday show appearances in which Jay Sekulow chanted “the president is not under investigation”, President Donald Trump’s lawyer appeared on CNN’s New Day for a marathon showdown with Chris Cuomo.
“The president issued that tweet on social media because of the report in “The Washington Post” from five anonymous sources…alleging that the president was under investigation in this purported, expanded probe”, Sekulow said.
The President and his allies have declared open season on Mueller and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who is overseeing the probe. He went after “obstructionist” Democrats; “cowardly” James Comey, the fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director; and the “Fake News Media.so wrong and so dirty”.
But Trump denies any collusion between his campaign and Russian Federation. repeatedly calling the probe a ‘witch hunt’. But Trump has also said he had chose to fire Comey before Rosenstein wrote a memo recommended him. In those meetings, Comey said that the President had demanded loyalty and on 14 February 2017 told Comey that he hoped he could “let go” of the investigation into former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, who Trump fired in February. Sekulow said he “can’t imagine” a scenario where the president would be under investigation and not know about it.
During the interview, Carson stated that special prosecutor Robert Mueller has to be given “a chance” to conduct a fair investigation.
Consider Trump’s response to James Comey’s dramatic Senate testimony.
And Senate Intelligence Committee member Angus King, an independent from ME, stressed that the probe will likely last for a long time.
Sekulow, who is 61, isn’t new to the Washington scene – he’s made a career championing conservative causes in court for decades.
Rosenstein’s involvement in some of the events Mueller likely would investigate renders his continued oversight of that probe “just not tenable”, according to Peter Zeidenberg, a former assistant USA attorney for the District of Colombia who previously worked in the DOJ’s Public Integrity Section.
“To say, “Comey told him he’s not under investigation, so he can’t be” – that’s illogical”, Cuomo said.
As USA Today reported previous year, Trump has been involved in more than 3,500 legal matters, which was an unprecedented number for an American presidential nominee.
Shortly after Comey was terminated from his position, Trump hinted in a tweet that their conversations may have been recorded and that Comey should therefore avoid leaking to the press.
“I think I better wait until I get done with my conversations with Feinstein before I answer that question”, said Grassley, who also wants to review any actions taken by Obama attorney general Loretta Lynch to influence the Clinton email investigation. Comey’s testimony also strongly suggested that special counsel Robert Mueller is now investigating possible criminal activity by Trump himself. Comey did tell Trump he was not personally under investigation, but that was before the director was sacked.
A few minutes before that tweet, Trump spoke about the witch hunt, saying “Despite the phony Witch Hunt going on in America, the economic & jobs numbers are great”. To their minds, “investigation” is tantamount to “guilty”, and their cherished goal of removing Donald Trump from office was on track to succeed.
While aides have advised Mr Trump to stay off Twitter, the president continued to weigh in Sunday as he spent the weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland.
