Warriors: Golden State’s nine 3-pointers in the first quarter broke the previous Finals mark held by five teams, most recently the Warriors in 2015.
James understood the potential of this Golden State goliath with more firepower than perhaps anything the National Basketball Association has seen before. The comeback Cavaliers are at it again.
“It’s a dramatic situation to be in, ” James said. And tonight, they punched us but we continued to fight. “We just have to go get it”. We shared the ball, we moved the ball and defensively we were physical.
“Our mindset is to go out there and get one”, James said.
Warriors victory was powered by Kevin Durant’s scoring exploits, who scored 31 points, seven of them in the closing minutes.
Golden State went on an 11-0 run.
They will again have to rewrite the record books if they can recover this position, but with the Warriors seeking revenge for past year that will be some ask. “We’re going to keep scrapping”.
It’s a Warriors team that trailed Durant’s Oklahoma City team 3-1 in the Western Conference finals, rallied to win that series, then blew a 3-1 lead vs. the Cavs in the 2016 NBA Finals. This kind of intense late-game scenario has been a rarity for Golden State this postseason.
Klay Thompson said there was no question in the Golden State huddle that Durant would make a big shot when needed. “So I just told guys, I didn’t stress anything besides just live in the moment”. Curry (26 points, 13 rebounds, six assists) was controlling the action, looking primed to sneak ahead of Durant for potential Finals MVP honors.
“Just one of those games”, Curry said. “Not going to overreact to one”.
James is arguably the best player on the planet, and no one has ever doubted the unmatchable impact he has for the Cavs squad, but this stat shows just how effective he was. Another game where Tristan Thompson was missing in action.
J.R. Smith recovered from a poor first two games to score 16 for the Cavs.
Kevin Love failed to continue his hot start to the Finals in Game 3, finishing just 1-of-7 from three-point territory. It was their 15th straight win of the 2017 National Basketball Association postseason, and a victory in Game 4 will give them the first ever ideal playoff run in the history of the league.
It was Cleveland’s first lead at the end of any quarter in this series.
Game 4 will be on June 10 LIVE at 9 a.m. with a primetime replay of S+A at 8 p.m. of the same day.
At one point, it was announced that Green had been given his second technical foul, and security came onto the floor to usher the volatile forward to the locker room.
“He took over”, Warriors coach Steve Kerr said of Durant. Pachulia could have been tossed, but was only given a technical, as was Shumpert. Golden State took what had been an impassioned Cavs effort fueled by an all-in home crowd and snuffed it out in the most ruthless fashion possible. The champions had 49 points in the first quarter.
