Lead surgeon: United States congressman Scalise showing improvement after being shot

The day before he opened fire on a baseball practice for congressional Republicans outside Washington, D.C., James T. Hodgkinson said he was making plans to return home to IL.

Scalise, the third ranking member of House Republican leadership, was among six people who were injured after a gunman opened fire Wednesday in Alexandria, Virginia, during a Republicans’ early-morning practice ahead of a charity baseball game.

“He is more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones”, MedStar Washington Hospital said in an email Saturday. “We are encouraged by improvement in his condition over last 36 hours”.

“The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers”, the hospital wrote, “on behalf of the Scalise family”.

When Scalise arrived in the hospital, he had an “imminent risk of death” and was “as critical as you can be”, doctors also said.

“[Scalise] will require additional operations to manage abdominal injuries and other broken bones”. The list included Representatives Mo Brooks and Jeff Duncan, who were at the practice, and Representative Trent Franks, who was not, CBS said.

One of the Capitol Police officers injured in Wednesday’s shooting has thrown out the first pitch at the congressional baseball game – to thunderous applause.

The person told The Associated Press on Saturday that investigators aren’t sure of the significance of the names and don’t know if it was a list of people he was targeting.

Sava added that Scalise “was as critical as you can be when he came in” after a single rifle shot traversed his body from his left hip through internal organs to the other hip as witnesses said he was fielding ground balls.

According to Sava, the bullet fractured upon entering Scalise’s hip.

Doctors “fully expect him to walk”, Sava said, “and hopefully run”.

House Speaker Paul Ryan has paid a visit to wounded Majority Whip Steve Scalise at the hospital.

The gunman, identified by officials as James Hodgkinson, died after the shootout. A staffer, lobbyist and Capitol Hill police officer also suffered gunshot wounds during the attack.
