Mother charged after trying to smother child

A North Carolina mother is accused of trying to smother her 1-year-old on Saturday at a hospital, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. Police sources told Channel 9 that Dixon tried to smother the child four times within 15 minutes.

Employees at Levine Children’s Hospital were alerted to the alleged attempts at infanticide when a monitor indicated there were irregularities with the baby’s vital signs, specifically fluctuations in his breathing.

Dixon was immediately removed from the room by hospital staff, and officers arrived on scene shortly thereafter.

Hospital staff looked at video surveillance and saw 32-year-old Maggie Dixon attempting to suffocate her child.

Maggie Clark Dixon, 32, was arrested Sunday at Carolinas Medical Center Levine Children’s Hospital, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

The child remains at the hospital. The Department of Social Services is also investigating. She remained in jail Monday and it wasn’t known if she had a lawyer.

Anyone with information about the case or Dixon is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
