Torres was questioned near the scene of the attack and led officers several miles away to a retention pond across the street from his apartment complex where a female body, believed to be the girl’s, was found at about 3 p.m. Sunday.
In an announcement Monday, Fairfax County Police stated that the death of Nabra Hassanen-the teen who was violently beaten by a driver as she and her friends were walking early Sunday morning-will be investigated as a road rage incident and not a hate crime. Police have not identified Hassanen, but her father confirmed she was the victim in Sunday’s attack.
Police say the girl and her friends were walking back from a McDonald’s in the Sterling area early Sunday when they got into a dispute with a man in a auto.
According to police, Nabra had finished a post-service breakfast at IHOP and was walking back with friends when she got into a dispute with a man in a vehicle early Sunday. Police said they do not yet know why the suspect was so enraged, but that there is no indication that he had any particular bias against Muslims.
Hassanen’s friends called the police from within ADAMS around 4 a.m.
Around 3:40 a.m. Sunday, they said, Nabra and about 15 other teenagers were leaving a fast food restaurant in the town of Sterling and returning to the mosque, known as the All Dulles Area Muslim Society. They arrested Torres during the search after noticing him driving suspiciously and allegedly finding several items of evidence in his vehicle, police said. Investigators say she was walking to a mosque with friends.
After an hourslong search, police found her body in a pond. “He caught up with them a short time later in a parking lot and chased them with a baseball bat, striking 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen and then abducting her in his vehicle”.
We are NOT investigating this murder as a hate crime.
He added: “When I go to court I’m going to look him in the eye: ‘Why did you do this to my daughter?’ Then I’m going to forgive him and leave him to God’s face”.
“I just can’t think of a worse instance to occur with the loss of a 17-year-old on Father’s Day”.
A awful murder of a Muslim teenager inspired many on the left to blame President Trump and Islamophobia, but the narrative collapsed when more was learned about the murderer captured by police.
Believed to have been motivated as a hate-crime, police have not said if the slaying was influenced in such matter. As they walked together, a vehicle pulled up to the group with a lone driver inside who confronted them causing all of them to disperse leaving Hassenen behind.
When the vehicle hopped the curb, they perceived hostile intent and began to run. The group of more than a dozen kids did not immediately realize Hassanen was missing. The boys declined to give their names.
ADAMS is Northern Virginia’s largest mosque and, with 11 chapters around the District and Northern Virginia, is among the nation s most well-known congregations.
Martinez is now being held without bail at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Centre. A judge appointed him a public defender, whose office declined comment.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a statement on Monday that 22-year-old Darwin Martinez Torres of El Salvador has had no prior encounters with ICE.
The girl’s mother, Sawsan Gazzar, said detectives told her Nabra was struck with a metal bat.
Hassanen, who was not very religiously observant, did not normally wear traditional Muslim clothes, her mother said, but had borrowed an abaya from her mom to wear during Ramadan.
He said in an interview with The Guardian: “He followed the girls, and all of them had head cloths, meaning they are Muslim, and he had a baseball stick”.
“With regard to this case, I am confident justice will be served”, she said at the news conference.
