Pregnant woman shot dead by officers after police say she brandished knife

The officers claimed that Lyles showed a knife, leading the police officers to discharge their firearms and fatally shoot her.

A female voice in the background utters an expletive as the officers repeatedly warn her to back away. The other officer responded, “I don’t have a Taser”. “She has mental health issues”. She had called the police on the morning of 18 June to report the crime. “She just told them to call my sister and tell my sister gets here”. Both officers will be placed on administrative leave during the investigation, authorities said.

The two officers, who have not been named, fired at Lyles, killing her.

Family members tell the Times that the shooting was unnecessary and that race was a factor.

“It baffles me that she was recently released and they knew she was going to be coming home to four children, all under 11”, said Murray.

Police on Monday released audio of the officers discussing a previous encounter with the woman before they reached the apartment.

On the scratchy dash cam audio released Monday, the two officers can be heard preparing for the call by discussing the previous police call to her house. Roughly 15 seconds later, officers can be heard saying, “Get back!”

The SPD’s Force Investigation Team (FIT) along with the police department’s Office of Professional Accountability is probing the incident to look closely at what the officers could have possibly done to calm the situation, KUOW News and Information reported.

She said her sister had been arrested earlier this month, with a weapon in her hand, after getting into a confrontation with her child’s father.

Police said they sent two officers to respond to Lyles’ burglary report because they her and were concerned for the officers’ safety.

The officers talk about the woman previously waving large metal shears and trying to prevent officers from leaving her apartment, and making “weird statements” about her and her daughter turning into wolves.

On the dashcam audio of Sunday’s incident, officers can be heard greeting Lyles and asking questions about the burglary report.

Hey! Get back! Get back!” an officer shouts before gunfire erupts.

“There is no reason for her to be shot in front of her babies“, Monika Williams, Lyles’ sister, said Sunday.

Jamieson said that at some point after Lyles armed herself with a knife both officers “had to fire their service weapons”.

Relatives told The Seattle Times that the woman was pregnant and had mental health issues.

Jamieson said officers performed first aid until the fire department arrived, but Lyles was declared dead at the scene.

One police officer was seen cradling a sleeping child outside apartments where shooting occurred.

“Our historic police reforms, from de-escalation training to civilian-monitored force review, are in place to address such crises”.

Lyles’ death marks the latest accusation against the Seattle Police Department of excessive use of force.

The recent shooting of African-American Charleena Lyles by Seattle police on Sunday triggered a huge outcry among citizens with many branding the incident as an act of racism. “This will be fully investigated”, Murray said.
