In a series of statements on Twitter on Thursday, Mr Trump repeated his claim that Mr Mueller’s investigation is a “WITCH HUNT” based on the “phony” premise of possible collusion between Russian Federation and a cadre of Trump campaign associates.
Trump hammered off a second tweet Thursday, again calling the investigation a “WITCH HUNT”.
However, it is likely that he was tweeting about Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, or Mueller who is examining whether the president obstructed justice by firing ex-FBI Director James Comey last month amid the ongoing Russian Federation investigation.
Mueller is overseeing a host of investigations involving people who are or were in Trump’s orbit, people familiar with the probe were quoted as saying.
“The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal”, a spokesman for Trump’s legal team, Mark Corallo, said.
Quoting officials, the newspaper said one event of interest to Mueller is an exchange on March 22, when Coats told associates that Trump had asked him to intervene with Comey to get him to back off the focus on Trump’s former national security advisor Mike Flynn as part of the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe of the Russian Federation affair.
And on Thursday, the committee will hear testimony from Coats in a classified session – after he refused to say publicly last week whether Trump asked him to pressure Comey to back off Flynn.
Trump originally said he fired Comey due to a recommendation by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. The media reports focused on if Trump ordered anybody in the intelligence arena to prevent FBI from investigating the crimes of Flynn as well as collusion.
Comey said he typed notes describing the conversations because he was anxious Trump “might lie” later about them. “Nice”, the president tweeted. The White House recently began referring all questions on Trump and Russian Federation to the lawyer Marc Kasowitz. Mr Pence hired criminal lawyer Richard Cullen as special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation intensifies.
In addition, officials also said investigators have been looking for any evidence of possible financial crimes among Trump associates.
Rosenstein earlier this month confirmed he had the ultimate authority to hire or fire Mueller, but said he has been given a wide berth to conduct the probe.
