Qatar signs $12 billion deal to buy F-15 jets from US

“It is confusing, and the worst thing you want to do in a heated, delicate situation like this is to give mixed messages”, Paul Sullivan, a Middle East specialist at Georgetown University in Washington, was quoted as saying of the Pentagon announcement.

Qatar’s Ministry of Defence said that the deal would create 60,000 jobs in 42 USA states while reducing the burden on American forces.

The sale appeared to be another example of the confusing series of mixed messages sent by the Trump administration, in which the White House speaks in an entirely different voice from the military and diplomatic wing of the us government.

Trump’s comments last week broke the tone espoused by Tillerson and Mattis in recent weeks in relation to the Gulf fallout.

“The nation of Qatar unfortunately has historically been a funder of terrorism at a very high level“, Trump told reporters last week, according to Reuters.

They accuse Qatar of “funding terrorism“, fomenting regional unrest and cozying up to Iran, all of which Qatar denies. “Stop teaching people to kill other people, stop filling their heads with hate”.

The agreement was reached a few weeks after the US President Donald trump has signed a contract with Saudi Arabia for the supply of American weapons nearly 110 billion.

Qatar long has been trying to secure its relations with the U.S., whether through hosting the American military base or an office for the Taliban, said David B Roberts, an assistant professor at King’s College London who recently wrote the book Qatar: Securing the Global Ambitions of a City-State.

The Saudi monarch asked Mr. Sharif to take a clear position on Qatar during their meeting in Jeddah on Monday, The Express Tribune reported, citing diplomatic sources. “Our relationship is extremely good”.

Qatar has expressed its frustration at not receiving specific demands from the Saudi alliance, complicating efforts to reach a diplomatic solution.

HE the Minister of State for Defence Affairs Dr Khalid bin Mohamed al-Attiyah signed the agreement in Washington with US Secretary of Defence James Mattis.

Two warships of the US Navy arrived at the Hamad Port in Doha on Wednesday “to participate in a joint exercise with the Qatari Emiri Navy”, the Qatari Ministry of Defence said in a statement released on QNA.

Just in November previous year, US has approved a possible sale of F-15QA aircraft to Qatar for $21.1 billion where it can get upto 72 fighter aircrafts.
