Real Madrid president says Cristiano Ronaldo situation is ‘very strange’

“Two years ago we had the disaster of the late fax, they (United) sent it two minutes late and that was it”, Perez said in an interview with Spanish daily Marca on Tuesday, the day after earning a third consecutive mandate with Real.

Newly re-elected Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is “not contemplating” Cristiano Ronaldo leaving the European champions, despite talk of the disgruntled star returning to Manchester United. The principle is that, starting from that principle, and Cristiano has always had the will to fulfil because I know him as a person.

Ronaldo, the four-time Ballon d’Or victor, reportedly wanted a transfer away from Real and out of the country after being accused by Spanish prosecutors last week of defrauding tax authorities of €14.8 million (about £12.9m/$16.5m).

It has been reported that the Real Madrid star wants to leave Spain this summer and United have been linked with a world-record move for his services. Something very odd will have to happen for him to go. I’ve heard everything through the newspapers.

But neither the Real star, on global duty with Portugal at the Confederations Cup in Russian Federation, nor the club itself have confirmed reports that he is heading for the exit at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“I have not spoken with him since [the Champions League final in] Cardiff”. We have not received any offer for Cristiano, nor for [Álvaro] Morata [the striker wanted by United] or James [Rodríguez].

“It surprises me when I read the opposite in the press”.

Last year, Real Madrid signed Ronaldo to a contract extension that would keep him with the team through June 2021, and his agent claims that his buyout clause is over $1 billion, which clearly limits the realistic suitors. “The truth is we have great goalkeepers“.
