Rep. Scalise upgraded from ‘critical’ to ‘serious’ condition

“Doctors are happy with the progress he’s made”, Scalise’s press secretary, Lauren Fine, tells PEOPLE.

Law enforcement officials identified the shooter as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, who later died from injuries sustained during a shootout with police on the scene. He has required surgery several times since the shooting. Scalise remains in critical condition, but his vital signs reportedly stabilized.

Sava declined to put a timeline on when that might happen or when Scalise, 51, will be able to leave the hospital.

One of them was the third-ranking House Republican, Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise.

“I think that an excellent recovery is a good possibility”, Dr. Jack Sava, director of trauma at MedStar Washington Hospital Center said at a news conference Friday afternoon. The team doesn’t plan on removing them all soon: The Congressman has already undergone multiple surgeries in the last 36 hours. It includes photos of Scalise and his family.

The bullet damaged blood vessels, bones, and internal organs, Sava said.

Nonetheless, said Sava, “we fully expect him to be able to walk” and “hopefully run”.

Scalise was shot Wednesday morning as a gunman sprayed bullets into a GOP congressional baseball practice.

Congress members and aides watched Mr Scalise drag himself through the dirt field after he was shot, leaving a trail of blood behind him.

Sava said he told Scalise’s family: “I am not declaring victory until he’s playing ball in his backyard with his family”.

“She says she’s grateful to President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and all of Scalise’s Capitol Hill colleagues “who have reached out to us during this most challenging time”.

Scalise was shot in the hip and taken to the MedStar Washington Hospital Center on Wednesday, where he underwent his first surgery after the attack.

Officials said Hodgkinson was carrying notes on which he had written the names of some Republican lawmakers. Scalise was shot Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, .

Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot multiple times and critically injured.
