Representative Steve Scalise’s Condition Improves to “Serious”

Hodgkinson is accused of shooting at several members of the Republican baseball team that was practicing this week for the annual congressional baseball game played for charity.

“The congressman’s status remains critical”, Dr. Jack Sava, the director of trauma at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, told reporters.

Authorities said Wednesday there was not yet a clear motive for the shooting, as the FBI investigated Hodgkinson’s associations and social media postings.

This is according to a person familiar with the case who was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press Saturday on condition of anonymity.

There were no explicit threats on the list, officials said.

At her weekly news conference, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said she was “personally heartbroken” over Scalise’s injuries. Doctors said Friday the bullet entered at his hip and traveled across his body, causing severe damage to internal organs.

President Trump and first lady Melania Trump visited Scalise in the hospital Wednesday night and brought him flowers.

Hodgkinson 66, who was from the St. Louis suburb of Belleville, Illinois, died after being shot by police. Nonetheless, said Sava, “We fully expect him to be able to walk” and “hopefully run”.

Doctors say Scalise will be in the hospital for a “considerable period of time”.

Even with the progress over the last two days, though, Sava said Scalise will remain in the hospital for the near future. “I think that his risk of death right now is substantially lower than when he came in … he was as critical as you can be when he came in”.

“On behalf of Steve and our children, I want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes we have received since Wednesday’s events”, Jennifer Scalise said in the statement. The shooter also wounded a congressional staffer and a lobbyist, as well as Griner and a second Capitol Police officer.

Bailey was spotted Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.
