Scalise Remains in Critical Condition Will Require Additional Surgeries

Steve Scalise was upgraded from “critical” to “serious condition” today and continued to show signs of improvement after he was wounded in a shooting at a Republican baseball practice outside Washington.

At the press conference Friday, Scalise’s chief of staff Brett Horton read a statement from Scalise’s wife Jennifer thanking everyone for their prayers and well wishes and thanking the Capitol Police officers who helped save lives at the scene. Griner remained hospitalized at MedStar Hospital after getting shot in the ankle, and Sava described her in good condition.

The bullet entered Scalise’s body in the area of the left hip, and then traveled across his pelvis, Sava said.

Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot in the chest at the baseball practice.

Three other lawmakers were injured in the attack and Hodgkinson, from Belleville, Illinois, was shot and killed by responding officers.

Trump’s comments came at the beginning of his speech in Miami Friday announcing a partial rollback of ties to Cuba – reversing changes made by President Barack Obama’s administration.

He said Scalise will likely have more surgeries in the coming days, as the surgeries done so far have been mostly along the lines of “damage control”.

“Both were purchased by the shooter from federal firearms licensees”, the Capitol Police said in a statement.

Hodgkinson, who had a history of posting angry messages against Trump and other Republicans on social media, died after being wounded by police. James Hodgkinson had been a vocal opponent of the Republican party.

Although Scalise was able to talk while lying injured on the ball field, he had gone into shock by the time he was transported by helicopter to the hospital and arrived “in critical condition with an imminent risk of death”, Sava said.

Colleagues who visited Scalise, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, sounded generally upbeat, but spoke more in terms of hopes than the confident predictions of the immediate aftermath a day earlier.

Scalise’s next operation will likely take place in 48 hours, Sava said.

“I told him they were Republicans”, the lawmaker said, according to the report.
