Scalise undergoes surgery Saturday, shows ‘signs of improvement’

The shooting, which injured Majority Whip Steve Scalise, took place after Hodgkinson asked Florida Rep. Ron Desantis, “Are those Republicans or Democrats out there practicing?”

“I feel a lot more optimistic than I did two or three days ago”.

“The round fragmented and did substantial damage to bones, internal organs, and blood vessels”. According to Sava, the bullet fractured upon entering Scalise’s hip. The congressman underwent another surgery on Saturday, and the hospital said he was more responsive and speaking with family.

More on this as it develops.

He was identified as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois.

The doctor said U.S. Capitol Police Special Agent Crystal Griner, who was also wounded in the shooting, “sustained a gunshot wound to the ankle, and remains hospitalized in good condition”.

The 51-year-old Republican congressman from Louisiana underwent another surgery on Saturday, the hospital treating him said, which was at least his third operation since being transported to the facility. “He will certainly be in the hospital for a considerable period of time, presumably weeks”.

Mr Scalise’s trauma surgeon said on Friday he could hope to make an “excellent recovery”, even he arrived at the hospital at imminent risk of death.

“This man was just so passionate and hateful toward (President Donald) Trump”, said mechanic Crist Dauberman of the Del Ray Service Center.

“We all owe Steve a big, big thank you”, Trump added. Cathy Rainbolt, the grandniece and foster daughter of Hodgkinson, told a judge in 2006 that he and his wife hit her and noted that he consumed alcohol every day.

A law enforcement official says the gunman who wounded a top Republican congressman and several other people during an early morning baseball practice legally purchased his rifle and handgun. Congressional aide Zack Barth, Tysons Food lobbyist Matt Mika and Capitol Police Officer David Bailey were also shot in the attack, but have since been released from the hospital.
