Top US Republican lawmaker Steve Scalise remains hospitalised in critical condition after being shot this week but he has improved, his surgeon said Friday as he expressed optimism about the legislator’s prospects for recovery.
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise’s (R-La.) family celebrated Father’s Day by tweeting picture as the congressman recovers from Wednesday’s shooting in a Washington, D.C. hospital.
Scalise had been at “imminent risk of death” when he was first brought into the hospital on Wednesday, and he received many units of transfused blood, the doctor said.
Speaking today from the White House, President Trump said Scalise’s condition- initially announced as “stable” – was “much more hard that people even thought at the time”. “The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers”, the hospital wrote, “on behalf of the Scalise family”. Hodgkinson was killed by capitol police.
Bailey received a hero’s welcome from a record crowd of almost 25,000 at Thursday’s game when he threw out the first pitch.
The Congressional Baseball Game, an annual tradition, went on as planned Thursday. Reporters in Washington tracked Scalise’s every hospital update and shared it on social media. But he stopped short of providing specifics of Scalise’s internal injuries.
Several other people were also injured in Wednesday’s shooting before Scalise’s security detail and other police officers gunned down the assailant, who later died.
The U.S. Capitol Police said Hodgkinson used a 9 mm handgun and a 7.62-caliber rifle in the shooting, and traces run by investigators showed he evidently acquired the weapons legally.
“[Scalise] will require additional operations to manage abdominal injuries and other broken bones“.
Members of Congress took the field at Washington’s Nationals Park on Thursday night for the game, many wearing hats to honour Scalise.
Scalise, who underwent a third surgery Thursday, is listed in critical condition after being shot through the hip.
Earlier Thursday, President Donald Trump commented on the congressman’s condition, saying Scalise was “in some trouble” but that he hoped the congressman would be OK.
On Friday, Bailey was spotted back in the Capitol building, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.
Rep. Mo Brooks, an Alabama Republican, said two law enforcement officers were believed to be among the others shot.
