WASHINGTON – Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise was upgraded from “critical” to “serious condition” Saturday and continued to show signs of improvement after he was wounded in a shooting at a Republican baseball practice outside Washington.
Scalise remains in critical condition in a Washington, D.C. hospital following yesterday’s early morning attack during a GOP team baseball practice in Arlington, Virginia. He said doctors have turned down Scalise’s sedation levels enough that the lawmaker has been able to respond to family members visiting him in the hospital.
Doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital, where Rep. Scalise is being treated, discussed his condition on Friday saying that they believed he would be in the hospital for a considerable amount of time, possibly weeks.
Doctors say House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (skuh-LEES’) has a good possibility of recovery after he was at “imminent risk of death” from a gunshot wound to the hip two days ago.
They said that his “risk of death” has substantially lowered than when he arrived at the hospital.
Fox News” Chad Pergram said that his “medical situation is “complicated’ and that he would “need later surgeries for broken bones”. Sava said Scalise “clearly knows” his family is there and “appreciates” their presence. “They saved a lot of lives”, Trump said.
The baseball tradition is said to have forged a friendship between Richmond and fellow Louisiana Rep. Scalise.
Trump began the morning by calling those leading the Justice Department’s Russian Federation election meddling probe “very bad and conflicted people”, then contended the shooting that also injured several Capitol Police officers, a lobbyist and a congressional aide has “brought some unity to this divided country”.
President Trump delivered brief remarks before the game calling for unity and noting that the entire nation was praying for Scalise.
President Donald Trump visited Scalise at the hospital Wednesday night and later said in a speech, “He’s a great fighter and he’s going to be OK, we hope”.
“We’ve had a very, very divided country for many years”, Trump said.
House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., paid a visit to his injured colleague at the hospital Friday.
The U.S. Capitol Police said Hodgkinson used a 9 mm handgun and a 7.62-caliber rifle in the shooting, and traces run by investigators showed he evidently acquired the weapons legally.
Bailey received a hero’s welcome from a record crowd of almost 25,000 at Thursday’s game when he threw out the first pitch, and Barth also showed up for the game, walking with crutches. Griner remained hospitalized at MedStar Hospital after getting shot in the ankle, and Sava described her in good condition.
Capitol Policeman David Bailey was also wounded.
