Warmbier grew up in the Cincinnati suburb of Wyoming. The governor says Warmbier’s family showed strength and courage through a awful ordeal. He said he was kept isolated most of the time but not physically abused. He was kind, generous and accomplished, and had all the talent you could ever ask for and a bright future ahead of him.
Some observers believe that North Korea became anxious because Warmbier’s condition suddenly worsened. Otto Warmbier was 22.
President Trump condemned the “brutal” North Korean regime and vowed to work to “prevent such tragedies” happening again.
“Unfortunately, the bad torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we received today”, they said.
In January 2016, he was detained at the airport of Pyongyang, when the student tried to take the poster of political content. Court of Korea found the student guilty of “crime against the state” and sentenced to 15 years hard labor.
