Rodgers confused by Griffiths booking after being targeted by missiles

Effect of the religious undertones, there was a bit of hassle from the home fans who pelted coins and glass bottles at Griffiths at one point in the second half, after the Hoops hitman seemingly made a “5-1” reference with both of his hands. At the end of the game there was one Linfield fan who succeeded on getting onto the pitch to race towards the striker, although he was quickly removed from the fray.

Asked whether he was concerned during the game, Rodgers said: “I didn’t see or haven’t heard as of yet what was thrown on”.

He added: “I didn’t see what it was but if that is the case then there’s always a worry”. It was maybe a bottle of some sort, but anything, whether it’s a coin or a bottle or whatever, it shouldn’t happen.

With the first leg over and done with Celtic should be able to direct one eye towards the next round where they could potentially face League of Ireland champions Dundalk who go into their second leg in Trondheim next week drawing 1-1 with Rosenborg following the first leg.

“You sometimes get these scenes not only here but throughout the country and it’s obviously not something we want to see”.

“The game was played in good spirit in the main and ideally it’s not what you want to see”. I thought it was odd [Griffiths] getting booked for it. “I would much rather be settled in Glasgow with the boys playing week in, week out”, Benyu told reporters. “The scoreline was okay, it could have been better but it gives us the advantage for the second leg”.

The second leg is at Celtic Park on Wednesday before Brendan Rodgers’ side begin their Scottish Premiership campaign against Hearts on August 5. “We got the job done”.

The teenager has hinted that he initially expected to go on loan for the 2017-18 campaign, but is now determined to impress his manager during pre-season as he eyes a first-team spot in the new season.

While veteran Northern Ireland worldwide Roy Carroll was forced into a number of smart stops in the home goal, there was a sense that the Brendan Rodgers’ team rather took their foot off the gas after going 2-0 up with 22 minutes. It could have been five or six on another day.

“He has come in and played with a nice little edge”.

“It could have been a really hard game for us but in the main we dealt well with it”.
