India secured their first medal of the World Para Athletics Championships today as Sundar Singh Gurjar bagged Gold in the Javelin Throw F46 category.
The World Para Athletics Championships will run through to 23 July. In the absence of Paralympic gold medallist Devendra Jhajharia, Sundar, who had been disqualified from his event in Rio 2016 due to technical reasons, set the record straight and took home the gold medal with a personal best throw of 60.36 metres. My morale was completely broken then, but I am delighted with this comeback to competition. Finishing in fourth place at the World Championships was India’s Rinku, who also recorded his best throw of the season, but it was not enough to fetch a medal. I am happy, of course, although I was not at my best because I have had an injury to my calf.
He further added, “Hence, this gold medal is great motivation for me to perform even better from here on”.
India would have got another medal but Virender Dhanwar missed out on a bronze medal as he finished fourth in Men’s shot put event.
Day 4 will feature six Indians in three different events – Men’s Club Throw F51 Final (Amit Kumar and Dharambir), Men’s 400m T44 final (Vinay Kumar Lal and Anandan Gunasekaran) and Men’s Triple Jump T47 (Ram Pal Chahar and Amit Kumar). Both women couldn’t better their personal best throws as they finished with 5.43m and 5.35m efforts.
