US To Allow 15000 Additional Visas For Temporary Workers

The Trump Organization is among the businesses that use the visas. The government generally offers 66,000 such visas a year.

Jessica Vaughan, policy studies director at the Centre for Immigration Studies, said those kinds of rates should force a rethink at the State Department, which issues visas, and should spur immigration officials to put more effort into deterring and deporting overstays in the U.S.

The Department of Homeland Security will increase the amount of temporary seasonal worker visas by 15,000 for the rest of the fiscal year, DHS officials announced Monday.

“As a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to supporting American businesses, DHS is providing this one-time increase to the congressionally set annual cap”.

Congress gave Kelly authority to authorize additional visas earlier this year and he said in May he planned to grant at least some additional visas. It’s a new requirement to access the visas under Trump’s “America First” administration.

The increase is only for workers who will start their temporary employment before September 30 and businesses submitting petitions will be considered in the order they apply.

DHS says a notice about the extra H-2B visas will be posted later this week in the Federal Register. “They were part-time jobs”.

President Donald Trump has been outspoken against what he views as abuses of the H-1B visa program, which allows companies to employ workers over a longer period of time in specialty occupations, including science and technology.

“This is yet another example of the administration and Congress failing to keep the Trump campaign promise of putting American workers first”, he said.
