Roger Federer outlines his goals for the rest of his career

Backing up his win at the Australian Open earlier this year, Federer’s Wimbledon triumph was the 19th Grand Slam crown of his storied career. It was very, very tough to deal with it.”Cilic had taken pain relief before the match in a bid to get him through, but he revealed he thought he would struggle once he felt more discomfort in the pre-match warm-up”.

The 35-year-old yesterday beat Croatian Marin Cilic 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 to claim his eighth Wimbledon title yesterday. “I guess it’s a bar”, Federer said.

Never count out Roger Federer. “I wish that we would see more coaches, more players taking chances up at the net, because good things do happen there”.

A 31-2 record for the year to date – concentrated to 14-0 in grand slams – has helped Federer win five of the seven tournaments he has entered this season.

“But I want to see if he’s that elegant also dancing”.

Cilic wept inconsolably on Centre Court midway through the second set after calling for medical attention on a nasty blister on his left foot.

‘I’m going “okay, I know he’s not going to serve and volley, which is great”. That is, he’s not going to outrun anybody and he is not going to outjump anybody, but he just seems to have a natural instinct on the court of exactly where the ball needs to be and how to get it there.

‘It’s frightening to me, to see at this level when I look at the stats and go into whatever round it is and see the guy I’m going to face has played two per cent of serve and volley I’m like, “Okay I know he’s not going to serve and volley” which is great’. I wasn’t serving very good today because of that.

Pliskova, a 25-year-old from the Czech Republic, has never won a Grand Slam title – she’s not the first player to top the rankings without that achievement on her resume – although she was the runner-up to Kerber at last year’s U.S. Open and a semifinalist at Roland Garros last month.

She had supported the tennis legend during his men’s final against Cilic because she preferred dancing with him on the night.

Cilic is confident the blister will have healed by the time he starts his build-up for the US Open. “But unfortunately it was not meant to be. But we had a good time”.

Federer won his 18th Slam in Australia in January on his return to the tour before adding the Indian Wells and Miami Masters back-to-back and a ninth Halle grasscourt title.

“I really wanted to give my best, ” Cilic said, “to try as much as I could”.
