Buffalo Bills make a splash, acquire Jordan Matthews and EJ Gaines

The Rams’ second-round draft pick, the Eagles’ third-round draft pick, cornerback E.J.

We’ve acquired CB E.J. Gaines and a 2018 2nd round pick from the Rams for WR Sammy Watkins and a 2018 6th round pick.

The second trade, which was announced by the Bills immediately after the first, sent cornerback Ronald Darby to Philadelphia for receiver Jordan Matthews and a 2018 third-round pick.

Watkins is entering the final year of his rookie contract.

This is a breaking news story. Overall, the Bills have six picks in the first three rounds. First-year Bills coach Sean McDermott avoided using that rebuilding label for his team this offseason, but it now can be slapped on the 2017 Bills, who have clearly sacrificed short-term gain for potential long-term success. The Bills previously declined his 2018 option. In 37 career games in Buffalo, Watkins had 153 catches and 17 touchdowns, although he missed 11 matches over the last two seasons.

Turn out the lights on the Buffalo Bills’ 2017 season, because it is over before it started.

The Rams need playmakers for an offense that finished last in the N.F.L. the past two seasons. Watkins required a second operation in January after aggravating the injury last season. But the addition of Matthews at the No. 1 receiver spot on the depth chart gives the Bills a proven weapon. His best season came in 2015 when he made 60 catches for 1,047 yards with nine touchdowns.
