The defence ministry has sanctioned the proposal, which suggested a requirement of 544 robots, army officials reportedly said. Such robotic weapons will help security forces in counter-insurgency as well as counter-terror operations.
For the past eight months, CAIR, a DRDO lab leading India’s research in artificial intelligence, has been working on this project.
These robots are being built keeping in mind the current military scenario which demands operations in different conditions-environmental and terrain.
Police said following specific information about the presence of a group of militants, security forces including army’s Rashtriya Rifles, state police and Central Reserve Police Force surrounded Awneera village in Shopian.
He further said that 2-3 terrorists of Hizbul Mujahideen are suspected to he holed up but identity will be asertained only after encounter is over.
The “lightweight and rugged” robots will be capable of picking up inputs and transmission from a range of 200 metres.
