Pep Guardiola is reportedly eyeing a reunion with Sergio Busquets

Former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach Guardiola claimed it was necessary to reinvigorate City’s ageing squad but he will only seek to add one or two new faces in forthcoming seasons.

“So yes we’ll look at as many good experiences as we can do, and that’s for the whole of the season, not just the start”.

“So we have to disregard most of it, because it’s something that we can’t affect”.

Brighton, who returned the top tier after a 34-year absence by finishing second in the Championship, last hosted City in a 2008 League Cup tie.

“Danilo is 26, (Benjamin) Mendy is 23, Bernardo (Silva) is 22, Ederson is 23, so we bought players who are going to be stable for the next years”. “Close to the box he has the quality to score a lot of goals and he’s a fighter too so he’s going to help us during the season”.

“Guardiola also pointed out City were not alone in the high-spending stakes during a summer which has seen the world transfer record smashed with Neymar’s B£200.6million move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain”. Intelligent players don’t need time to be involved in the way we want to play.

Pep explained City’s heavy investment, saying, “We had one of the oldest teams in the Premier League so we chose to put energy in the team for the next five, six years”. We spent, of course, but all the teams spent – except maybe Tottenham.

“I think he’s close to coming back”, he said.

“Some of the transfer fees are insane but it shows how good these players are”.

“The club was clever like that because we anticipated what we needed”.

Suffice to say, Busquets has etched his place in history and is rightly regarded as one of the best holding midfielders of all time.

There is the slightest possibility that defensive midfielder Busquets, 29, could be tempted by a reunion with current City manager Pep Guardiola, who had a huge impact in his early career as Barcelona boss between 2008 and 2012.

There were some promising signs last season – an opening salvo of 10 straight wins, a stunning Champions League victory over Barcelona – but City never found any consistent form. “But we try to win the game”. “We are going to see at the end of the season what happens, knowing how hard it is”.
