Rogers Cup: Caroline Wozniacki beats Sloane Stephens to reach Toronto final

The Dane has been the tour’s most winningest player, amassing 46 wins against just 15 losses, but in each of her five previous finals she has fallen.

Sixth seed Wozniacki, the champion in 2010, saw off unseeded American Stephens 6-2 6-3 in the first semi-final in Toronto.

Wozniacki’s road to the semi-finals included a victory over world number one Karolina Pliskova. But Wozniacki struck again a few games later, and served out the match after a brief rain delay at 5-3.

Wozniacki will face the victor of Saturday night’s semifinal between defending champion and No. 2 seed Simona Halep of Romania and No. 5 seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.

Svitolina resumed her quarterfinal with Garbine Muguruza trailing by a set, but turned things around superbly to beat the Wimbledon champion 4-6 6-4 6-3. “But I came here today and I got ready before this match and I’m really proud that I could play so well”. She’ll face either Elina Svitolina or Simona Halep for the title. “I just want to give my best, enjoy the match, and try to fight”, Halep said.
