Masahiro Tanaka’s uneven 2017 season took another downturn on Saturday when the Yankees placed him on the 10-day disabled list with inflammation of the right shoulder.
“I don’t think this will be too long”, manager Joe Girardi said.
Righty reliever Giovanny Gallegos has been recalled in the interim from Scranton. Unfortunately, he joins C.C. Sabathia as recent additions to the Yankees’ DL. After the game, Tanaka told the team he was ailing.
Girardi said there is nothing structurally wrong with Tanaka.
“We decided he needs a break”, Girardi said. Rather, Tanaka was feeling more tired. “I’ve had a tough time getting the soreness out of the area”. The Yankees are fortunate to have starting pitching depth, as NY added acquired Jaime Garcia and Sonny Gray before the trade deadline.
The former Japanese ace is 8-10 with a career-high 4.92 ERA in 23 starts during an up-and-down season. Tanaka won’t throw at all over the next five days and will miss a couple starts while he rests his exhausted pitching arm, putting him in line to return sometime when the Yankees face the Tigers between August 22 and August 24. Bryan Mitchell and Luis Cessa are options to slot in for Tanaka’s rotation spot.
