Nassau County police say Bobby Vanderhall was captured Saturday following the early morning slayings.
They found a chaotic scene with three women dead – they were identified as a 58-year-old, a 28-year-old and a third woman whose age was not known. Detectives say he then used that hammer to bludgeon his mother, his sister and two other women who were in the home at the time.
The casualties were distinguished as his mom, Lynn Reichenbach-Vanderhall, sister, Melissa Vanderhall and a family colleague, Janel Simpson. She fled the home and called for help. Police said Vanderhall had been kicked out of the house by his mother and was homeless. She is in stable condition at a local hospital. Bobby Vanderhall stayed in the house for a short time before fleeing, and was apprehended within a two-mile radius of the scene sleeping in a vehicle, said Fitzpatrick.
He was found sleeping in a vehicle within two miles of the crime scene and was arrested, police say.
The attack is “possibly domestic”, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the incident said.
