Dele Alli, Ben Davies score as Tottenham beat Newcastle

Newcastle United suffered a 2-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in their opening match of the 2017/18 Premier League campaign. “I’m sure the next week or the week after we will sign”. We have been talking about that for a while.

Pochettino, however, admitted his side had found it hard to break Rafael Benitez’s men up until that point: “We knew how they play, so narrow and deep”.

“We can not change anything”. In a stadium that doesn’t have good memories for us, it was important to win. “He made a mistake”, Benitez said.

Kyle Walker-Peters, the 20-year-old right-back who impressed on his Premier League debut, added: “I found out yesterday in training before we did tactics and shape work”.

What I would say is [Shelvey] made a mistake.

Spurs took advantage of playing with an extra man, and scored twice with Dele Alli and Ben Davies getting their name on the scoresheet.

It will be a pleasing result for Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, who has fielded hard questions following Tottenham’s absence of movement in the transfer market and the explosive comments from Danny Rose in which the left-back hit out at the way the club has been operating.

Dele Alli scores past Rob Elliot.

Harry Kane missed a one-on-one chance in the 51st minute but Alli opened the scoring 10 minutes later. “He showed in the U.S. that he was ready to play”, Pochettino said.

The Spurs boss rotated between a back four and a three-man defence last season dependant on who was available to him, and this will again be a major consideration ahead of the game at St James’ Park. “It happens sometimes”, Alli said of his clash with Shelvey. He then scored a great goal. “He needs to improve, he is not at his best expression, but it is coming”.

Spurs lacked ingenuity and Kane was shown a yellow card for scything down Lejeune in a tackle that brought the Frenchman’s outing to an early end.
