Giroud rescues Arsenal to seal 4-3 opening win vs Leicester

Arsenal had to rally from 2-1 and 3-2 down in an action-packed Premier League opener that was decided by Giroud’s thumping header off the crossbar in the 85th minute at the Emirates. After Aaron Ramsey levelled in the 83rd minute, Giroud sealed the three points within two minutes on an evening of thrilling attacks gifted by fragile defending.

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud staked a claim for a starting place with the victor in a thrilling season-opening 4-3 victory over Leicester City in the Premier League on Friday. I don’t think I would have started him.

Arsenal Wenger on Alexis’ injury: “He had a scan two days ago and he’s out for a while – we don’t know if it is two weeks or one more week, but he will not be available”. Because I know how important he is, not only as a player – he is a fantastic player – but as well in the group.

Giroud appears willing – if a little reluctantly – to accept his role as an understudy to Lacazette.

“Top quality game and you want PL to be best in the world and you have to produce games like that”, Wenger told reporters.

“I love the man and the player because he’s a fantastic guy. committed (and) he loves the club”, Wenger said. “It’s a determined no”.

“It’s simple, in every game he is stronger since he joined us”, Wenger said.

The match was a great advert for a league that is already prime box office viewing worldwide but Arsenal’s hopes of a first title since 2004 will require some polishing of a rusty defence after Leicester put away half of their chances. The defense will need to become firmer if far sterner opponents than Leicester are to be beaten. “We kept going and the spirit of the team was absolutely outstanding”, he said.

“He is focused. Of course when you have treatment on a medical bench, it’s not easy”.

“I’m happy the goals we conceded we can work on together”.

“We were quite good last year on corners and with a bit of work we can get that out of our system”, added Wenger, who has been given another two years in charge of Arsenal.
