In the early kick-off on Saturday afternoon, Watford welcomed Liverpool to Vicarage Road and it certainly didn’t disappoint.
Redknapp suggested that Liverpool’s defensive problems would be solved if they signed Virgil van Dijk from Southampton.
Speaking on Sky Sports following Watford’s last gasp equaliser, Carragher was scathing in his assessment of the Reds’ defending as a whole – not just their back four – and expressed his frustration at Klopp’s insistence on utilising a zonal marking system at set pieces.
Their side were trailing 2-1 at the break after Watford twice took the lead through Stefano Okaka and then Abdoulaye Doucoure.
However, Carragher disagreed: “On set pieces it’s not about the defenders”. But instead, his colleague reacted very badly, arguing that one player wouldn’t be able to sort this mess out.
Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher believes that Romelu Lukaku’s addition at Manchester United will embolden their title challenge this season.
He has already got off the mark in a red shirt, complimenting the three goals he scored over pre-season with a 62nd minute strike against Real Madrid on his competitive debut. What have they worked on?
Redknapp said: “I look at that Liverpool back four and there’s a reason why they concede so many goals because they’re disorganised and they have no leaders at the back”. That’s what happened on the first goal – it comes from a counter-attack. One player’s not going to change that’. “Nothing changes. What have we done pre-season?”
I think everybody’s missed this mischievous “friendship”.
Redknapp then said: “I think Van Dijk’s agent should put another 20 grand a week on his contract”. Carragher was in the process of saying, before Redknapp interrupted him.
“I mean he’s been questioned about scoring in the big games, but that was a big problem for United previous year, beating teams at home, teams they should beat, so I think he’ll help with that”.
Redknapp was adamant that a van Dijk who is willing to head the ball can rectify matters, but Carra was having none of it.
Carragher was adamant – extremely adamant – that one player, regardless of how good they are, can not solve Liverpool’s shaky defence.
He added at full-time: ‘Liverpool lose the ball and their centre backs are exposed, even if you have Franco Baresi there you are going to get exposed.
It’s hard to argue with Carragher.
