JDU removes Sharad Yadav party leader in Rajya Sabha

The split in the Janata Dal-United is all but apparent with the party removing Sharad Yadav as the leader in the Rajya Sabha.

He said the decision has been communicated to Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu. The JD (U) has 10 Rajya Sabha MPs and two in the Lok Sabha. The party is recognised in Bihar only, where he does not have a single MLA or MP. Sharad Yadav has called a conclave on “sanjhi virasat bachao” (save composite culture) at Constitution Club in the capital. If he continues what he is doing, he could face suspension from the party…

However, he said that Yadav has not been removed from the party. In his statement a few days back he said that the mahagathbandhan was formed for 5 years, Nitish has broken the trust of 11 crore people of Bihar by breaking the alliance and joining hands with foes disguised as friends. Nitish could be made convenor of the NDA, the stature once enjoyed by George Fernandes and Sharad Yadav, according to JD (U) leaders. Yadav had publicly opposed the JD (U)-BJP alliance in Bihar, saying the people of the state voted for the Grand Alliance. He said Yadav’s removal was an “injustice”. He also sent a senior JD (U) leader Ali Anwar on his behalf to attend the opposition party meet organised by Congress high command Sonia Gandhi on Friday. He has taken care of such concerns in the Bihar council of ministers. We are not going to get cowed down by such threats.

“It’s not a question of individuals… Kumar’s decision to align with the BJP is unacceptable”, Ansari said. He also added that he is still with the grand alliance. People are with us. “The chief minister is of clear views that the party nominees in the NDA government at the Centre will not be chosen on the basis of caste considerations”.

Besides the JD (U), Lalu Prasad’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress were in the three-party coalition. BJP president Amit Shah had extended the invite to Nitish during their meeting in Delhi on Friday. Speculations are that leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad may attend the meeting.

Shah confirmed the rumours on Saturday after he tweeted, “I met JD (U) president Nitish Kumar at my residence yesterday”.

Nitish is expected to formally announce his decision to join the NDA at the party’s national executive meeting in Patna on August 19. Sources said that while one person from the JDU would be given a Cabinet berth, another may be given a Minister of State rank as and when the Cabinet expansion happens.
