The United manager had outlined four positions he wanted to strengthen in to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward at the start of the transfer window, but only Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic have arrived at Old Trafford.
When Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United won the Europa League, he instructed his team to celebrate by holding up three fingers to indicate the three trophies they had clinched – Community Shield, EFL Cup and the Europa League.
“I could see when I first came to United that we needed a Matic-type player”, he said. But there are not many like that, just a couple.
The Portuguese added: “I want to play West Ham a hard match, then go to Swansea for another hard match”.
‘When I got a call that Matic wants to play for me, I thought he was the flawless player for me. The way I know him and the way he knows me.
Mourinho says he is after another player “coming from the sides” to complete his summer business – leaving the door open for either a winger or a full-back. “I am on fire”.
“We have [bought] three players, as you know”.
‘Matic is one of those players where there are no question marks with him.
“He doesn’t need time to adapt”.
Fuelled by a historically lavish spending spree, the Premier League returns yesterday when Arsenal host Leicester in the opening game of the hotly-anticipated new season.
“He’s one of those players who gives me what I like in a player, which is consistency. He is a fantastic signing for us because I can trust him to perform at a high level”.
‘Of course to buy lots of good players is important and better squads are better equipped to win the title. That is normal, but that is not enough.
“I don’t think I’m in a position of crying, moaning, protesting”. They didn’t sell, like some were expecting, the top players – Ozil, Alexis.
Mourinho’s confidence is largely because he feels United are a club that now carries his influence.
“I’m happy with the club’s efforts”.
‘We are much better organised at every level. The medical department is better and we are much stronger as a team in the analysis department.
Jose Mourinho’s men enjoyed a successful pre-season, beating the likes of Manchester City and Real Madrid, but losing to Barcelona and to the Spanish champions Real in the UEFA Super Cup.
“I don’t think I am going to win it because I always win it in the second season”.
Having been accused last season of being too downbeat and complaining about his lonely life in Manchester, Mourinho enters 2017-18 cutting a different figure.
“So I’m happy to start on Sunday, we are ready”.
“Europa League is not Champions League”, he said.
