Raiders RB Lynch sits during national anthem

Lynch sat during the national anthem, as captured by USA TODAY Sports Images photographers Mark J. Rebilas and Matt Kartozian, before his first preseason game with the Oakland Raiders. The two discussed it afterward and came to an understanding.

A number of NFL players sat or took a knee during the national anthem throughout the 2016 NFL season, including former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who kneeled throughout the season to protest racism and police brutality against minorities in the United States.

“On Marshawn, talked to Marshawn trying to make sure we’re on the same page”, Del Rio said. “He said, ‘This is something I’ve done for 11 years”.

Del Rio told reporters he did not believe Lynch sitting would be a distraction.

Lynch has yet to see live National Football League game action since the 2015 season and was just one of a litany of projected Raiders starters who were held out of Saturday’s 20-10 Week 1 preseason loss.

Marshawn Lynch sits during the National Anthem before tonight’s Raiders/Cardinals pre-season game. Raiders linebackers Bruce Irvin and Malcolm Smith joined in early past year, by standing through the anthem with a raised fist before a game at Tennessee.

Violence broke out at a “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday, leaving one person dead.

True to form, Beast Mode left the locker room before media was allowed in. He did not speak with the press.
