Half flop leaves Nebraska with questions to answer

"He wants us to enjoy playing football, not to be uptight". It's really a team. OR put up 566 total yards and 42 points against the Nebraska defense.

Though halfway across the country, Nebraska and OR do have a history on the field.

Maligned last season, Oregon's defense thwarted Nebraska's comeback.

"I'm not going to use that as a cop out you know I think that's just an excuse", Weber said. "We watched it to kind of look at the personnel, look at our guys, but not necessarily with anything to help us this upcoming season because things are so different for both teams", he said.

Point: Sophomore running back Tre Bryant finished with 107 yards, with 81 coming on first down. Nebraska brought their fans and about an eighth of the Stadium was Red.

"They're unbelievable", Diaco said of the support.

The Cornhuskers were down 42-14 at halftime but rallied with three unanswered touchdowns.

Riley's former boss was in attendance in Columbus; suffice to say, he was excited over the developments.

Meanwhile, receiver De'Mornay Pierson-El (shoulder) and outside linebacker Marcus Newby (hamstring) participated in warmups. But Willie Taggart's group responded with a 35-7 scoring run that ensured its memory would be diluted.

OR took the opening kickoff and drove 75 yards in five plays, with Herbert connecting with Brenden Schooler for a 32-yard touchdown pass and 7-0 lead.

But Nebraska's staff hasn't had as much success against Oregon. A pocket passer whose reputation is highly accurate throws, Lee was 19-for-41 for 252 yards, three touchdowns and those four interceptions.

As is often the case, Royce Freeman, months from an National Football League contract, gashed the opposing defense, pacing the Ducks with 134 yards and two touchdowns.

Herbert struck again with an eight-yard pass to Charles Nelson to give UO a 14-0 lead just 3:29 into the first quarter. Defensive back Aaron Williams intercepted a pass early in the third quarter, and defensive back Antonio Reed forced a Freeman fumble, which Williams recovered.

For his part, Lee had a tepid showing.

The Huskers got a big break when they recovered a fumble deep in OR territory, and running back Mikale Wilbon capped it off with a three-yard touchdown to make it 42-35 with 2:47 to go.

-The Huskers scored on a 10-play, 95-yard touchdown drive in the first quarter. "We can tighten some things up, so I feel good about that".

Nebraska defensive coordinator Bob Diaco said he was happy with the way junior safety Antonio Reed played in the second half.

"I think in every game, there's some throws you'd like to have back", Lee said. "And then it got intriguing, because we started seeing all the options available that we didn't have under center".

The second half Saturday felt like a crossroads for the Ducks, and they did just enough to stay on the right path. The road win also seemingly gives OU a cushion in the minds of the CFP committee should they stumble at some point during the regular season.

Besides the offensive struggles, Riley pointed to Oregon's dominance in the first half as a big factor in the loss.

"We've been working all during camp with noise and two-minute drills", he said.
