The fifth quarter: The Penn State game

McSorley stood strong in the pocket, looked over the middle and tossed a laser between a pair of Iowa defenders. There's always a greater level of importance placed on the QB position at any level of play, but Barkley is alone at the top when it comes to players with the ability to take over a game.

It has been one year since Penn State's last regular-season loss, a 49-10 rout to MI in Week 4 of 2016. The sophomore caught the game-winning touchdown and had seven catches.

"For us, opening at Iowa is going to be a challenge, but that's a challenge that we're going to accept", wide receiver Brandon Polk said.

Barkley ran 28 times for 211 yards and a touchdown. His previous career best was 207.

But to find the last time the Nittany Lions won a game with a touchdown on the final play of regulation, you have to go all the way back to 1929.

"That was a Heisman-like performance".

"Being down 1-0 is a good opportunity to tie the game and being able to take it into overtime", she said, "and being down 2-0 makes it a lot bigger feat". Lewerke carried the load for Michigan State, connecting on 31-of-51 passes for 340 yards - many of them junk - with a touchdown and an interception with nine carries for 56 yards and a fumble. But no one else on the team has caught a pass longer than 35 yards. In addition, he entered the end zone on an impressive showing of footwork. It's becoming more and more rare to see a team's offense so focused around one running back, but Barkley's domination is thrilling. The coverage units were tremendous again, and safety Troy Apke blocked a Miguel Recinos field goal attempt that protected Penn State's lead. Penn State will not want to put this game in the trenches or this will look a lot like Michigan's trip to Kinnick Stadium when they lost 14-13, ruining their flawless season.

Until the final 96 seconds, when McSorley, Barkley and Johnson saved the day with a memorable scoring drive.

Penn State had to convert a fourth down and two from their 40-yard line. Mayfield's next chance to improve his odds will be at home against Iowa State on October 7. Iowa went the next year to Penn State to knock off the then #5 Nittany Lions 21-10 on their own run to an Orange Bowl. Iowa came close to delivering a crushing blow to Penn State's College Football Playoff case, but the Nittany Lions rode McSorley and some sensational running from junior tailback Saquon Barkley past one of the most daunting matchups on their conference schedule. But PSU failed to reach the end zone on two runs and then an incompletion by McSorley, so it settled for a 21-yard field goal by Davis with 10:43 to go in the third. Penn State is a second-half team, remember?

Half full: Saquon Barkley is incredible.

The decision to pitch the ball back to Akrum Wadley on a second-and-eight play from the Iowa 3-yard line was freaky at best. Stanley completed 13 of 22 passes for 191 yards and two scores.

But as was the case in the first half, the Nittany Lions couldn't parlay chunk gains into points that would have provided peace of mind.

Half empty: OK, let's dive into the numbers and see if there's a bit of a growing concern with the overall offense and passing attack. Barkley scored the game-winner on a wheel-route reception out of the backfield, racing past Wisconsin linebacker T.J. Watt. Johnson's 30 points vs. Missouri are as many as Missouri's team has scored over its last three games combined.
