Recent CBS News polls show that marijuana legalization is gaining support.
Sixty-one per cent of Americans believe marijuana should be legalized. This is five points more than last year, and the highest ever recorded percentage in this poll. Eighty-eight% favor medical marijuana.
Seventy-one per cent oppose federal government efforts to end marijuana sales and use in states that have legalized the drug. This includes opposition from most Republicans and Democrats as well as independents.
Sixty-five per cent believe marijuana is safer than other drugs. Only 23 percent believe legalization of marijuana will lead to an increase in violent crime.
Concerning drug abuse in general, 69 per cent believe that it should be treated more as a mental and addiction problem than a criminal offense.
